I have used the "destination-out" method you describe, but didn't notice any particular slow-down on the stock Android browser. Though of course you end up using more memory because of the extra canvas. However that method also has the advantage of being able to use the alpha channel to fade out your shape around the edges, giving a better result in most cases.
