Where do you guys get FX sounds?

Hi there guys,

I always have the same "problem" with games, I never find cool places for sounds, specially effects (usually I don´t use background music)... anyway, my question is, where do you find those sounds?

 

Do you usually record some of them?

 

Do you have supercool links for me?

For sound effect, usually I can generate myself a decent sounding one with this tool: http://www.superflashbros.net/as3sfxr/

For free sound editor, I use Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ . It works great for me

I've used sounds from there a lot and they are always really good quality.

Audacity gets my vote for free'n'simple sound editing

For sound fx, this cropped up on this forum a few weeks ago: http://www.universalsoundfx.com $15 for a large selection of royalty free sounds

Otherwise, I tend to use soundrangers.com for specific fx and short music loops

Can anyone recommend a library of sound fx to buy/download? Something that is well-organized, easy to browse. The bigger, the better. I bought http://www.universalsoundfx.com/ , which is great, but its lacking cartoony sounds.

One you have the sounds, I recommend Wavasaur (free) for editing. Its really fast for chopping, fades, converting bit rates, sample rates, etc.

Also has VST support.

It all depends on which sound effects you need.

 

Some general sound effects sources are:

http://www.superflashbros.net/as3sfxr/  is nice for 8  bit sounds

http://audiojungle.net/ offers some really cheap sound effects, my game "Find the Difference" uses some sounds from  this soundpack

 

If it's just a "small time" game or project you could always take some sound effects from another game or record it from a movie on DVD or from some tv show. In theory the original creator (EA, Warner Bros etc.) could contact you and sue for copyright infringement, but this seems highly unlikely. Especially when it's just general foley sound effects, like a door closing or a car engine starting etc. Something like a voice from The Simpsons is a different story because it's more recognisable.

 

Of course, you could always just record some sound effects yourself from around the house and just edit with Audacity or something. The sound effects in my Snake Slider game are (I think all of them) just recorded using an ipod touch; biting into an apple, dragging a stone, turning a key etc. I'm currently working on a small project with all the sound effects recorded with an Android phone using one of the many WAVE recorder apps.
