JayJay
I noticed that some stock images sites allow commercial use without a paid account, you just have to credit the author/site in the game credits page. Example: https://www.freepik.com/profile/preagreement/getstarted/ Has anyone used this kind of resource? Would you recommend it as an alternative for indie games which are tight on budget for graphics?
totor
Read carefully the license, (if any doubt or unclear) ask the site directly. You can use CC0 or public domain commercially but you have to be sure that the work is cc0 or pd.
COSMOS_DolyGames
Yes for licenses you need to read exact requirements to be sure. Otherwise, if you have some Photoshop skills (or willing to learn using free YouTube videos) you can also "get inspired" from images and make your own version of them or, at least, modify them sufficiently to make them "made by you". Oh and it also helps to get creative and find some interesting way to avoid relying on images. I tried to challenge myself and did that in my last game, the Particle War, which I posted in the Game Showcase. Best of luck, COSMOS
