d13
Thanks for all your fantastic examples, everyone!!! Sorry to put you all to so much trouble, it seems like this is a very complex problem to solve. Given that I don't need this rendered in real-time (I just need a static image) I'll continue looking for some usable existing texture pngs and do some more experimentation in photoshop. https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/thumbnails/image/pia21046_main.jpg
Pryme8
this is not a complex problem at all this is pretty standard stuff, Just grab my or nas's example and run with it.

Gijs
I've made one with a texture: http://www.babylonjs-playground.com/#4P7GYS#1 I've made the texture with JavaScript (see sat.zip), you can increase the resolution by lowering the number: img.width /= 50; sat.zip brianzinn

I didn't do a good job as I am just heading out, but you get the idea. Shadows are finicky to setup sometimes - you just need a texture for the planet.http://www.babylonjs-playground.com/#4P7GYS#
