Using an animated sprite as a mask

I would like to know if there's any technique or method to use an animated sprite as a mask. It seems as though you can mask an object with an animated sprite but you loose the animation ability there for end up with a sprite. Any ideas? Thanks

Add the animated sprite as a mask and as a child element of what you are masking.

I tried that but now I loose the animation ability. In fact when I set the animated sprite as the mask it shows the entire sprite sheet instead of the 1 frame of the sprite sheet.
