jquery ripple effect in phaser

Hi,

 

I would like to use a water ripple effect within a phaser game (http://www.jqueryscript.net/demo/jQuery-Plugin-For-Water-Ripple-Animation-ripples/). The effect I am after is available as a jQuery plugin and should be applied on a background image.

 

Is this even possible in the phaser framework? I am not sure how sprites/images are handled. Can anybody shed some light on this?
